Top Ten Tuesday from those wonderful bibliophiles at The Broke and the Bookish left us feeling conflicted. So here goes : Characters Everyone Loves But I Just Don’t Get AND Characters I LOVE But Others Seem To Dislike
These are some badass characters that we love, love, loooooooooooooove to LOVE. But no one seems to agree with us )’:
LEVANA from The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
I feel that Levana just gets such a BAD rep for being the badass b*tch that she is but I feel it’s 100% warranted due to the horrible life she had! Everyone needs to read Fairest and then they’ll see the light.
DOLORES UMBRIDGE from Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix by J.K Rowling
I know you must be confused, how could I love the despicable Dolores Umbridge who caused misery with every pink encrusted step of her toady person? That’s just the thing…I despise her, but that is what makes me love her as a character. I often quote Umbridge as being my favourite character from HP because I have never come across a fictional character whom I have hated more. She is evil to her core but with a sickly sweet shell. Her evil is a special brand because she isn’t the dark lord incarnate, she’s just a nasty person so everything she does feels personal. So in summary, I love how much I hate her.
Aaaaand are some characters that we hate…
MIA from If I Stay by Gayle Forman
I did not enjoy this book but I particularly hated the main character Mia. I just couldn’t connect or relate to her at all. I feel like everyone loved her and this book but here I am just hatin’.
TAMLIN from A Court Of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
I did not fall for this frustrating character. I think what really killed me the most was the cringe worthy romance between him and Feyre. I DON’T GET IT GUYS!!
MARE from Red Queen (specifically Glass Sword) by Victoria Aveyard
She was fine in book number one but in Glass Sword Mare really grinds my gears. She gets so whinny and self-absorbed. She won’t take help from those around her and honestly I feel she is 100% to blame for basically everyone who died in that book. GET OVER YOURSELF MARE AND START TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!
(*Sidenote: Risabella is dying because I love Mare, FLAWS AND ALL, HAHA.)
ADAM from The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater
Don’t get me wrong these books are all amazing and I do love all the characters…but Adam freaking Parish in the Dream Thieves was the most annoying, self-deprecating creature I have ever encountered. He is too proud to ask for help from his friends who want to, and are able to help him and he only has himself to blame.
ROSIE from Love, Rosie by Cecilia Ahern
I ABSOLUTELY HATE ROSIE. This cover gives off the impression of a happy, cutesy, chick-lit along the lines of PS. I Love You or perhaps, Leap Year. NOPE. Rosie is a horrible protagonist with ZERO no backbone. She accepts defeat at every turn of life AND DOES NOTHING ABOUT. The love of her life is engaged to a horrible woman, what does Rosie do? Nothing. Rosie doesn’t want to move in with old-guy-she-is-dating-who-is-ten-years-older-but-is-afraid-of-living-alone, what does Rosie do? MOVE IN WITH HIM. UGH. Her decisions about life are just SO POOR. She’s never open with her feelings, doesn’t do anything she WANTS and blames everyone else for everything. I could not STAND her.
KESTREL from The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski
Oh, goodness. Where do I even begin with Kestrel? There is so much to love about her, TRULY. She’s talented, brave, determined, passionate. But what is utterly lacks is COMMUNICATION SKILLS. Kestrel never says what she means and is in a constant state of secrecy from the man she supposedly loves – Arin! I don’t get it. I feel when you’re struggling with a relationship, albeit a tricky, political one, YOU SHOULD TALK ABOUT IT WHEN YOU CAN. So many missed opportunities, Kestrel – PLEASE TALK TO ARIN IN THE WINNER’S KISS OR I WILL LITERALLY BURN YOU ALIVE.
What are some of your favourite or least favourite characters? Do you agree with us at all or are we completely off base?
