Ten Most Recently Added to Our TBRs!

We’re playing catch up on this week’s Top Ten Tuesday from the Broke and Bookish!

The ten most recent adds to our TBRs, though it was so hard to choose just ten!

OLIVIA

02These Vicious Masks by Tarun Shanker

The pitch for this book is Jane Austen meets X-Men, with a rise in paranormal and fantasy historical fiction recently I am so ready for this!

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

Not much to say, the sure to be heartbreaking, mind-blowing and epic beyond compare conclusion to the Raven Cycle. Can’t wait to read this but at the same time don’t want it to be over.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth

This book is going to give me major feels, I can tell. When Cameron’s parents die unexpectedly and she is forced to move to a small town with her ultra conservative aunt. Things get complicated because Cameron likes girls and that is not a part of her master plan to blend in into her new home.

I’ve read a lot of really good reviews of this recently and have that NEED to get my hands on it feel.

Shutter by Courtney Alameda03

About a modern day descendant of Van Helsing (yes you heard that right).  Give me ALL that paranormal fiction!

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken

There was lots of buzz leading up to the release of this book and now that it’s out EVERYBODY WON’T SHUT UP ABOUT IT! But seriously, treasure hunt through time? Sounds pretty amazing to me.

Front Lines by Michael Grant

The Book Thief meets Code Name Verity – I AM IN. Basically WWII with women, I love it already!

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Olivia won’t shut up about this… It’s about time I read this!

A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

I AM LOVING VICIOUS. So I need to, need to, NEED TO get on this one!

04The Girl in the Spider’s Web by David Lagercrantz & Stieg Larsson

Need to catch up on my favourite hacker! And see how this ghostwriting worked out!

Star Above by Marissa Meyer

AHHH! Olivia and I and our dear friend have made some EPIC plans becaaaaaause Marissa Meyer is making a stop on her Stars Above book tour at a bookstore near us! Need to prepare our hearts and our bodies for the amazing human that is Marissa Meyer as we continue to deny the end of the Lunar Chronicles.

A healthy mix of new releases and 2015 releases that just slipped past us – which do we read first?!?!

Reading Slumps: the scourge of the booklover

ROADTRIP

Friends and fellow book lovers, the worst has happened. I AM IN A READING SLUMP!

I don’t know how it happened, it just sort of crept up on me. At first I thought I was just picking bad books to read but then I realized something more was going on.

Please follow me on my journey to discovering this terrible affliction…

1.DENIAL

Reading Slump? Ya right, there are thousands of amazing books out there. I’ve just been picking some mediocre ones recently. I will find the right book, I’m just super busy right now that’s why I don’t feel like reading as much.

2. ANGER

THIS IS SO STUPID!!! WHY CAN’T I START AND FINISH A GOOD BOOK?!? WHO WRITES THIS STUFF? IS THERE SUCH A THING AS A GOOD BOOK ANYMORE?!? READING SLUMPS DON’T REALLY EXIST. WHY!!!! *flailing of arms* *pacing of room* *grumbling under breath*

3. BARGANING

Maybe if I binge watch all of Sherlock that will get me into the mood?

*lights candles* * burns incense* *casually builds alter of books*

OH DIETIES OF THE PAGES AND WRITTEN WORD PLEASE SEND UNTO ME A NOVEL TO SAVE ME FROM THIS CURSED SLUMP…PLEASE J.K ROWLING PLEASE WRITE ANOTHER HARRY POTTER!!!!

In paperbacks we trust, AMEN.

4. DEPRESSION

*under the covers*

I will never read a good book again

my reading days are over

I will be in this slump forever, it is not a slump, it is a never ending crevice, a bottomless pit

might as well burn my bookshelves because they are now useless….just like the literary world….

5. ACCEPTANCE

Hello, my name is Olivia and I am in a reading slump. It has been 2 weeks since my last novel but I will not give up! I know the perfect book is waiting for me

Now I can hardly blame any one book, but I have to say the reading Six of Crows and Illuminae so close together may have been a mistake. They were 2 amazing books and I think that now everything else pales in comparison. Anyways if you have any book suggestions to help me escape the dreaded reading slump please send them my way.

Illuminae: Lights Up My Life

Illuminae (Illuminae Files #1) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

out October 20th

23395680Illuminae is like FIREWORKS someone morphed into book form; explosive and awe-inspiring.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC from Random House for review and I shall forever be eternally grateful.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Kady and Ezra have just broken up, then their planet gets blown up and they barely escape. Sounds bad right? It gets worse. They are being pursued by the enemy who will eventually catch up to them, plus there’s a potentially infectious pathogen permeating throughout the crew and refugees…and I haven’t even mentioned the crazy Artificial Intelligence system that gets a few wires crossed to say the least.

A visual delight told in reports, IMs, diary logs, electronic code and communications. Illuminae will sweep you away with all of it’s twists, turns and never ending OMG moments.giphy

^me the whole time while reading Illuminae

WHAT I LOVED:

  • action packed suspenseful sci-fi
  • spaceships
  • crazy mind altering disease
  • computer hacking parkour
  • SO MANY PLOT TWISTS
  • “Am I Not Merciful catchphrase12080893_10154233202319606_341562884_n
  • visually stunning page formats and art
  • the fact that Leigh Bardugo’s name is somewhere in the book (you will have to keep an eye out for it)

WHAT I DIDN’T LOVE:

nothing.

At the beginning of the novel you are thrown straight into the thick of things without much backstory. I was personally confused at first and didn’t really understand what was going on, but as you read on you fill in the holes and have lots of ‘AHA’ moments. So just a different style of writing and storytelling that took a little getting used to for my part.

So, another aggressive recommendation from me..JUST DO IT!!!
